30 for 30 Shorts: Cutthroat (Clint Malarchuk)

Grantland did a short documentary with Clint Malarchuk about his almost deadly injury.

Our latest film, from award-winning director Steven Cantor, on Clint Malarchuk's long recovery from the gruesome NHL injury that almost took his life.

The latest film is Cutthroat, by award-winning director Steven Cantor. Clint Malarchuk was famous for being an NHL goalie, but he would go down in hockey history for suffering one of the most gruesome injuries in the history of sports when an opposing player's skate severed his carotid artery. This story covers Malarchuk's miraculous physical recovery from the injury as well as the long and grueling emotional recuperation that took two decades and included an eventual stay in a mental hospital for PTSD treatment. [Warning: This film contains graphic footage of the injury.]

Updated Posts

I went through this evening and added Sports Illustrated's photos of the NHL masks of this season. I also added photos and templates of the pads for the goalies I'd missed. And I added a few more photos for those that were lacking.

Sorry I was behind this season.

Sports Illustrated's Goalie Mask Gallery, 2013

Here is Sport Illustrated.com's Goalie Mask Gallery.

I went through and added the photos to each of the goalie's post on this site. But if you follow the link above you can look at them in order on sportsillustrated.com.

Jake Allen 2012-13 Mask

Jake Allen of the St. Louis Blues (born August 7, 1990 in Fredericton, NB.)

Allen played quite a few games for St. Louis after Halak was injured in February.

Darcy Kuemper 2012-13 Mask

Darcy Kuemper of the Minnesota Wild (born May 5, 1990 in Saskatoon, SK.)

I don't have any information about Kuemper's mask. He played in 6 games with the Wild beginning in February.

Joey MacDonald 2012-13 Mask

Joey MacDonald of the Calgary Flames (born Feb. 7, 1980 in Pictou, NS.)

I don't have any information about this mask at this time.

I think these pads might have been the ones he had when he was with Detroit, because you can tell by the photo above, he had all-white pads in Calgary.
